ooc~ S'ok
Katarina caught up quickly and rested her hands on her knees, panting. She, too, was tired. "You... okay?" she gasped, taking deep breaths. She smiled lightly. "A cheetah? No way." She looked back down at the ground. After a moment of more deep breathing, she added, "I haven't... run like... that in a... long... time."

Kilela was astonished. "Well, I bet you could outrun the best racehorse they have in this village." Kilela replied, regaining his compusure and taking slow, steady strides to catch up with Katarina.
"So, in school were you into sports or anything?" he asked once he had caught up to Kat.

Katarina looked away. "No... I was always really bad at sprots," she admitted. "Especially sports everyone liked. Mostly basketball," she said quieter, still not looking at Kilela. "Or volleyball. Which was why I was never really too popular. But," she said, turned to face him, "I was-- and still am, I guess-- pretty fast."

Pulling the 'yawn, stretch, and put-arm-around-the-girl' move, Kilela was slapped by his consience as his hand quickly darted back to his side, inadvertenly grabbing Katarina's in the process.
"Look, just because you weren't popular doesn't mean anything. You're good at sports, you're good at 'em. Screw what everyone else thinks. You could probably whip them in a race, anyway." he said, his words somewhat rough, but true.

Slightly startled, Kat lost her balance and rammed into Kilela. Nice, she thought. Really coordinated. And wasn't he just complimenting you? On sports? I thought you had to be balanced for that.
"...Really? I mean, I know it doesn't matter how popular I was, but, I was a lot younger then and it was pretty bad..." She paused and gazed at him. "...Thanks." She smiled. "That was really sweet of you to say that."

He smiled, thingying his head to one side. "I'm not even that good at cheering people up." he said, noting the many times where he had to sit and play Barbies for hours on end in order to make his sister happy again.
All the while though, Kilela never noticed they were holding hands until after he made his statement. However, Kat had run into him just then and he stopped and took her by the shoulders gently.
"You alright?" he asked, making all sorts of stupid faces to see if she would laugh. He noticed that some people tended to laugh when looking others in the eyes.

Katarina smiled, and then began to laugh. "I'm... fine," she said after her laughing had slowed considerably. "And, you're obviously great at cheering people up!" she added truthfully.
"Hey, if I wasn't happy, would I have laughed?" she said, looking at him again. She didn't have a problem looking people in the eyes. To her, that meant they were paying attention and really meant what they said.

Kilela chuckled a bit also, continuing to walk beside her, taking her hand "accidentaly" again.
"Ah. Some people enjoy putting on masks. Pretending like their happy." he said, free hand in his pocket. "I used to do that until I moved here. Found out I could just..be myself, y'know?" he said.

ooc~ Back
Kat nodded. Does he think I'm doing that? she wondered.
"Really?" she asked. She couldn't imagine him acting any differently. "....Why?" She had considered asking, but was still unsure if it was the right thing to say. She knew she sounded nosy.

Kilela shrugged. "I was depressed. Near suicidal. I was about sixteen at the time and had just lost another job. My parents were off to sea, and there was no telling whether they'd come back alive or in a box, the way those waves were. My sister had scarlet fever and was going blind in her left eye, and her cat. . .still despises me." he said, stern face at the mention of that pestering feline.
"Everytime I went to school, I'd play and joke around with my friends like nothing was wrong, when really I was supporting my sister, wondering if my parents were alive, and pretty much cutting myself, hoping to die." he said, harsh memories flooding his mind. "I'd pretty much know about being fake." he said, smirking uneasily.

Katarina bit her lip, looking solemn. She was quiet for a few moments, taking in what he had said. Finally, she spoke.
"...That's a horrible thing to happen. Working to support your sister, and... and wondering if your parents would come back alive." She paused, stopped walking, and turned to look at him. "But I don't think that was worth becoming suicidal," she said. "I'm not saying that your family doesn't matter, but... you really didn't know what would happen. Everything would become worse if you had died. Think about it. Your sister would have no one to support her, and with your parents away, that would not have been good. Your parents..." she stopped, just for a moment, before continuing, "Your parents would have been devastated." She stopped again, her eyes shone with tears and the last rays of the setting sun. She quickly blinked the tears away and added, "What if they hadn't come back? Your sister would then have nobody..." She stopped speaking. She had almost said, "Just like me."
